A charity drive that suits everyone

“The Women’s Leadership Council is really passionate about this program.”

Women looking to pull themselves up by their own Tory Burch bootstraps will get a hand this weekend from United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council. On Friday, the council will collect clothing and accessories to help outfit women in need for job interviews.

It’s the eighth year in a row for the council’s Women’s Fall Suit Drive, which calls for the following donations: “new and gently used, clean professional attire including suits, dresses, pants and tops on hangers, and jewelry, shoes, belts, scarves and handbags.” The items will go to seven nonprofit agencies that have work programs for down-and-out women.

“We go out and visit with the organizations we are working with, do site checks, talk to staff, meet donation recipients,” says United Way Marketing Director Laurie Mann. “The Women’s Leadership Council is really passionate about this program.”

The council collected nearly 12,000 items at last year’s drive, Mann says. This year’s event takes place Friday, November 6, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the NV Energy parking lot at 6226 West Sahara Avenue. For more information, see uwsn.org/wlc.

Desert Companion welcomed Heidi Kyser as staff writer in January 2014. In 2018, she was promoted to senior writer and producer, working for both DC and KNPR's State of Nevada. She produced KNPR’s first podcast, the Edward R. Murrow Regional Award-winning Native Nevada, in 2020. The following year, she returned her focus full-time to Desert Companion, becoming Deputy Editor, which meant she was next in line to take over when longtime editor Andrew Kiraly left in July 2022. In 2024, Interim CEO Favian Perez promoted Heidi to managing editor, charged with integrating the Desert Companion and State of Nevada newsroom operations.
