Computers for Kids (CFK) Mission: To offer students in grades K14, the opportunity to enhance their education through the use of technology at home.
Originally based in Boise, Idaho, Computers for Kids has distributed over 25,000 computers and recycled over 1,400 tons of computers, monitors, and computer equipment to date. Donations of computer equipment and software programs for CFK's program are received from individuals, schools, and government agencies. Our donation program helps address the growing problem of older computer systems being discarded to the landfill, or shelved and unused taking up warehouse space. It also provides a tax credit opportunity to the donator.
CFK receives donated computers from individuals and businesses, then repairs and refurbishes them for distribution to students for use in their home. All computer systems are provided as complete packages, ready for use by the recipient. Training sessions are provided if students need instruction on the operation and maintenance of their computer. Free technical support is provided to ensure that the student gets the full benefit of their computers. Student interns from local school programs assist with programming and tech service needs, gaining real-life experience in computer sciences. Computer systems that are not able to be refurbished are stripped of working parts for use in other systems. Any remaining, unusable parts are then recycled through an R2 recycler.
Computers for Kids is closing the "digital divide" by increasing knowledge and skills through use of home computers. This offers individuals in today's society an opportunity to succeed. Our program has key component that provide long lasting beneficial effects to the community and the environment through recycling, reuse, and refurbishing of computer components.
However, our most important mission is to offer Nevada students (K-14th grade) the opportunity to enhance their education through the use of technology at home. This is the Computers for Kids program- a program of education and community service designed to keep today's youth knowledgeable and educated in an electronic world.
